Job Title: Junior Tennis Coach

Camp Dates: June 16 – August 15, 2025
Camp Hours: 8:30 AM – 4:15 PM (No Camp: June 19th, July 4th)
Job Type: This is a temporary seasonal position with the opportunity to transition into a year-round part-time contract based on performance and organizational needs during the busy season.

Position Overview
WTEF is seeking enthusiastic, dedicated, and responsible individuals for the Junior Tennis Coach positions. This position is ideal for former nationally competitive junior, college, and professional-level players who have limited coaching experience and 6+ years of competitive playing experience. In this role, you will help foster a positive and supportive environment for children, ensuring they receive impactful tennis lessons and experiences.

Position Summary
The Junior Tennis Coach will work directly with youth participants, supporting tennis programming and enrichment activities, providing tennis coaching, and co-leading tennis-related activities. Coaches will motivate, manage, and engage with children in a fun, safe, and educational setting. This role also includes supporting tennis programming and activities, with coaching experience preferred. This position reports directly to the Camp Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Tennis Coach Responsibilities

  • Assist with the implementation of WTEF’s Junior Development Pathway for tennis.
  • Coach tennis at various levels
  • Advise players in a clear, concise, and timely manner
  • Assist in running tennis tournaments, team competitions, and social events.
  • Evaluate players’ progress and development along the WTEF pathway.
  • Actively promote and grow the tennis program within the community.
  • Motivate and engage students with positive feedback and encouragement.
  • Help with event operations, such as equipment setup, tournament support, and team management.

Summer Camp Specific Responsibilities

  • Supervise camp participants, maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment.
  • Facilitate engaging and interactive tennis activities to foster skill development.
  • Assist with camp operations, including supervising children during meals and coordinating field trips.
  • Serve as a role model, providing one-on-one support to students as needed.
  • Support summer camp enrichment programming and activities as needed.
  • Maintain attendance (including sign-in/out for campers).
  • Mentor summer camp counselors throughout the summer.
  • Provide appropriate feedback and information to parents as needed via phone or email.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior and engage with an appropriate response, ensuring accountability for the safety and well-being of both campers and counselors.

Qualities and Qualifications

  • Education: High School, Associate degree, or Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience: 1-3 years of junior development tennis coaching experience (USTA/USPTA/USPTR certification a plus).
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Strong leadership skills and responsible decision-making
  • Willingness to lead and/or assist in additional programming or duties as assigned
  • Act as a positive role model to campers and counselors while representing the Washington Tennis and Education Foundation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to facilitate interactive, age-appropriate tennis activities.
  • Strong group management, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage time effectively, and handle multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a diverse team.
  • Enthusiasm for working with youth and helping them develop socially, emotionally, and athletically.

Certifications

  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification required (we will facilitate training).
  • USTA or other tennis coaching certifications (preferred)

Additional Details

  • Must be available August 11th – August 15th
  • A minimum commitment of 8 weeks is required
  • Multiple locations throughout the DC Area (Southeast and Northwest)

Compensation

  • $17.60 – $33.00 per hour up to 40 hours per week, based on qualifications and experience (minimum 30 hours guaranteed per week)
  • $48 per hour for overtime (41+ hours)
  • Opportunities for growth and additional training in tennis coaching.
